Genre Crossovers

As previously mentioned the main genre on which I was focus sing on for my project was 'Indie Pop.' I have been looking into this genre a lot and researching bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Oasis and Blur to ensure that I capture the genre correctly in the project. I have also  been looking as Genre Crossovers. One of the biggest example of this is when Jay Z did a collaboration with Linkin Park for a song called Numb/Encore. Stereotypically Jay Z is a rapper and Linkin Park are Rock but they came together to portray both genres using tune, lyrics and the music video. As I have also been looking in the 'Grime' genre I wanted to some how show how 2 genres can come together and work well.

Jay Z and Linkin Park

Along with Kate Nash who would represent the 'Indie Pop' genre I have been looking into a Grime MC called 'Skepta.' Although grime music is stereotypically very heavy/fast breaths I believe if I somehow portrayed the 'calm before the storm' idea the music video would work.

Research Into Similar Products- Example Of Music Video

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VtyObAvzQ7o

This is an ideal example of what I want my overall music video to turn out like. It features a song by the Arctic Monkeys called 'Do I Wanna Know.' This is a very stereotypical Indie Song and he has captured the genre in many different ways throughout.

Clothing
In this video there is a boy featured wearing a leather jackets. This is a very normal piece of clothing for someone in the indie genre to wear
Skinny jeans are also featured which once again is very stereotypical items.
Standard Black Converse are also shown throughout which has connotations of the Indie Genre.
From 1.02 to 1.08 leather boots are also shown on the female character.

Lip Syncing-
As in most Indie Music Videos Lip Syncing is featured dramatically throughout. It makes a connection with the audience and also in terms of a A2 Music Video it makes it look realistic, believable and professional when do right. I hope to feature a lot of lip syncing throughout my video.

This is an example of a band called Peace using lip syncing frequently throughout their music video

This is a photo of Arctic Monkeys Lead Singer Alex Turner featuring some of the clothing mentioned in my previous paragraph.

A2 Preliminary Task

This is a task we completed to ensure that when making my final project I am confident with both the filming and editing process.

Firstly for the filming process we used 3 shots which were:

  • Shot Reverse Shot
  • Panning
  • Tracking

To ensure that the filming look both professional and realistic we needed to stick to the 180 degree rule so that the audience don't get disorientated when watching. Another rule we had to stick to was match on action. This meant that the cuts had to be slick and flow well therefore I used a variety of cross fades to help with this. My end goal was to produce a short film showing a variety of skills like, A wide range of Camera Shots and Angles and Effective use Continuity Editing and I believe I have achieved this in this film shown above. The overall task has made me feel more confident in all the stages of making a film/music video using the appropriate software and angles.

Drafting and Planning

Image result for kate nash magazine cover nmeThis is an example of a magazine cover featuring the artist who's song i am using for my music video. I have to create a magazine cover of my artist and I think i will be inspired by this due to the fact I believe she has portrayed the Indie Pop genre very well. The Medium Close Up used on this magazine gives a feeling that she doesn't care and is quite rebellious which we can also see from the violent look on her face. I want to portray this stereotypical 'indie rebel' in the magazine and the video and will do this by using generic codes and conventions.

Research into Similar Products

This is a song by a a band called 'Florence and the machine.' They are very similar to the artist who I have chosen to base my music video on. The genre of 'Indie Pop' is portrayed perfectly in both the song and video and has the usual codes and conventions of a song in this genre. The pace of the song is almost identical in the way of 'Kate Nash-Foundations' Therefore when looking on what to add to my video I will use this artist of a way of being influenced.                                                                                   Florence and the machine- Ship to Wreck

Research and Planning- Kate Nash

Kate Nash is currently signed to 5 record labels called:

  • Moshi Moshi Records
  • Fiction Records
  • Island Records
  • Dine Alone Music Inc.
  • The Island Deaf Jam Music Group
I am going to research these 5 labels to find out similar artistes who have been signed within my genre so that i can take inspiration from these artistes.

Fiction Records- Artists such as Tame Impala, The Cure, Maccabees, Crystal Castles and Elbow are all signed to this label. I know these bands and they are all of the indie genre. I will research these artists videos to collect inspiration.

Genre Conventions - Drafting and Planning

Indie Pop- To ensure I make my music video realistic and believble I will ensure my actors wear and act the same stereotypical way which artists in the Indie pop genre do.

  • Skinny Jeans
  • Baggy Shirts
  • Long Hair
  • Slow Paced Songs
  • Meaningful Lyrics
  • Video is related to the lyrics
  • Long Hair
  • Piercings
  • Cigarettes
  • Low Budget Video (Woods, Parks, Shopping Centers)

Drafting and Planning

In a way of preparing for my final music video we decided to get a feel for using the cameras and the different types of shots used to ensure our videos were professionally shot. We used 3 different shots called

  • Match Action Shot
  • Shot Reverse Shot
  • 180 degree Rule
We got into a group of 3 and filmed a shot of a person walking though the door and sitting down at a table with someone and having a 2 way conversation. (Photos will be uploaded soon.) This allowed to film the shot in a separate manner allowing us to put time and effort into each individual shot.

Song Ideas- Drafting and Planning

Kate Nash- Foundations

I believe this song will be perfect for the overall genre and video ideas which I have started to plan. This song is in the indie pop genre and the overall tempo is one of quite a slow pace which I think is positive a i can take each part of the song and create a scene frame by frame. Another positive of the song being slow is that I can get the people acting in my video to lip sync and as the lyrics are not that fast they can stay in sync with the music.
